What we do
The policy choices we make while trying to improve our living standards, can severely affect the welfare of our children. Future generations will pay the price of our failure to make the right choices today.
We propose, through our The “Green Accounting for Indian States & Union Territories Project” (“GAISP”), to build a framework of national accounts that presents genuine net additions to national wealth. This system of environmentally-adjusted national income accounts will measure the depletion of natural resources and the costs of pollution and will evaluate additions to the stock of human capital. To borrow from the language of accountants, we want to help present national accounts in the form of a balance sheet and not as an income and expenditure account.
We hope that a policy consequence of Green Accounting may be gradual increases in budgetary allocations towards improvements in education, public health and environmental conservation. All of these are key elements needed to secure India’s long-term future.
“GAISP” is a project in the public interest commissioned by the Green Indian States Trust, (GIST).
GIST is a not for profit trust registered under the laws of India and located in Chennai, South India.
